A common question….

13Jan13

A Common question we often get asked by customers, especially customers who are moving into mirrorless or D-SLR cameras is ‘can i only use the same brand accessories such as lenses, flashes etc on my new camera?’

The simple answer to this is no.

The long answer is no, there are many companies who make accessories for most brands of camera.

The major brands such as Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Panasonic and Pentax have long made their own lenses, flash units, battery accessories, but there have been companies such as Sigma, Tamron, Tokina who have produced lenses, Sigma, Sunpak and Nissin who produce flashes for the camera makers plus many other accessory makers who make everything from a new strap to cases and lenses and flashes.

Generally what happens, is companies such as Tamron or Sigma go to the Camera manufacturer such as Canon, Nikon, Pentax etc and buy a license to make the lens mount, and then design lenses and build them with each of the mounts, so their advantage is because they can produce 4-5x the number of lenses with only small differences in the back of the lens due to the different mounts of the manufacturers, their lenses can be significantly cheaper than the Canon/Nikon etc lenses.
